bio

David was born in 1957, the tail end of the baby boomer generation, a mythical age of American pride, prowess, and social mobility. He expressed his artistry at a young age. His father, a physician and first-generation American, had little familiarity or interest in the arts; he believed them a clever hobby, but a profession in the arts, lacking in appropriate stature, scholarship, and prestige. David was on track to be what his father expected him to be.

David attended Harvard University despite unclear academic objectives but with a singular goal of playing collegiate ice hockey. Following a career-ending injury, which turned out to be fortuitous, David departed Harvard for a two-year hiatus to attend the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, OH, USA. Here he rediscovered his creative passion. He returned to Harvard, completed his studies in the field of Art History, and was awarded the David McCord prize for excellence in the arts. He later continued his studio training at Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA, USA.

For following decades David waffled between commitments to the expectations of others and his own subjugated aspirations. He worked with considerable successes at a myriad of creative jobs: Design Coordinator for a major American corporation, Freelance Designer and Illustrator, Associate Professor & Vice President of The Art Institute of Boston, and owner of Designed Outcomes, a design consulting and project management business.

Notable achievements in each of these professions include: large scale, permanent installations at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, AL, USA and Minneapolis Zoo, MN, USA; critical roles in institutional development and the merger of The Art Institute of Boston with Lesley University; and the design direction and project management of multi-million-dollar residential properties. Despite accomplishments of this stature David felt unfulfilled which may explain the search-changing lanes of his career path.

David has now come to terms with his constant hedging - he has finally embraced his true nature. He has shed his sense of obligation to the priorities and expectation of others and has committed himself to self-expression through his Fine Art. The skills he so thoroughly developed in a multitude of creative professions - conceptual thinking, materials knowledge, planning, processes, and management – have contributed to the ambitious, powerful nature of his current work.

David has invested much in the past several years to develop a unique, compelling body of work. A body of work that reflects the temporal manifestations of his education, as well as, his varied experiences in creative fields. These experiences and the depths of David’s concerns have lent themselves to the creation of intense, compelling, and spiritual work.
